About

Want to know about something in particular?

what is a fanlisting?

A fanlisting is exactly what it sounds like: a list of fans. The goal of a fanlisting is to unify as many people from as many countries as possible under the single banner of "FAN." Because of this, most fanlistings are dedicated music, film, and the people that make it happen, but some fans have found reason to rally behind other exciting properties like nature. Or mayonnaise. This particular fanlisting is for the ever-engaging Final Fantasy VII.

A fanlisting is not an exclusive club. All that is required of members is a name, a country of residence, and a working e-mail address (which fans have the option to keep private). There are no monetary fees and there are no exclusive prizes to be won--just the satisfaction of showing other Final Fantasy fans that, yes, ours is bigger than theirs.

About This Fanlisting

Gospel Decay, the original incarnation of this website, was founded in 2002--probably in October. I open a lot of sites in October for some reason. The name "Gospel Decay" was chosen because I thought it was Deep and Mysterious back in 2002. It remained until 2010 because I thought it was funny and fit right in with the equally nonsensical "Advent Children."

Before 2004, the fanlisting was updated manually. You can thank Alex, Chloe, Emma, Giselle, Nao, Nell, and Tamisa for helping me manually format the 1400 fans-long member list to a database-friendly format. They're the ones that made it possible for you to easily update your information.

The fanlisting developed into a sizable fansite as both its members list and the FFVII franchise expanded, forcing me to invest in new hosting. Along with the new host came a new domain dedicated solely to the Compilation of FFVII, onto which Gospel Decay's general fansite content was moved. It is currently under re-construction to make navigation more user-friendly. In theory.

Important Notice: Gospel Decay will not support your petition for a re-make unless it requires all characters to wear top-hats.

about Final Fantasy VII

Originally released January 31st, 1997, Final Fantasy VII has emerged as a model for the young video game industry. Not only was it a tremendous financial success in its day, but it ultimately changed the way we look at video games; it established video games as a legitimate medium for storytelling.

On the most basic level, Final Fantasy VII is a love story. Unlike much of the franchise, however, the seventh is not about the love between a man and a woman (despite some extreme protests to the contrary). FFVII is about the love for life and self; it's about figuring out who we are, why we are, and learning to accept it. Although Cloud Strife -- the hero of our story -- is introduced as a cold, cocky mercenary, this is a front destined to be broken with all the force of a sledgehammer. Cloud Strife's journey is an emotional one filled with more questions than answers, but it is an engaging one as well, and the people he comes to lean on -- and those he pushes away -- each add his or her own unique spin on the story.

Final Fantasy VII introduces players to an interactive world. We aren't just observers passing through; we interact with Cloud's world. We really get the sense that these environments are inhabited by people, and everything (not to mention everyone) has a story to tell. Although some of these distractions have led to misunderstandings among players when interpreting the story, they have successfully kept FFVII in the spotlight for more than a decade. There's always some new observation to pick up and discuss.
